Mahjong Real
Mahjong Real is a Mahjong game with the classic Chinese tiles and 18 different board layouts to complete, including the Turtle, Square, Canyon, and Castle layouts. Can you find the matching pairs and combine them to clear away all the tiles?
How do you play Mahjong Real?
In this board game, the aim is to clear away the tiles until there are none left. Players can clear the tiles by finding the identical pairs and selecting them to combine and remove them. However, not all tiles are playable from the outset of the game, and this is what makes mahjong solitaire games challenging.
Players can only pick up those tiles that form the top layers of the layout. Tiles that are covered by other ones cannot be selected until you have cleared the tiles blocking them. Playable tiles must also be free along at least one long side. So tiles that are stacked on top, but are boxed in on both the left and the right by other tiles also cannot be selected until they are unblocked.
Work your way from the top and the sides toward the tiles buried all the way at the bottom of the tile arrangement. If you run out of moves, you can shuffle the remaining tiles to see if this unlocks new possibilities to create a match.
Please note that there is one exception to matching identical tiles: the flower and season Bonus tiles (see below) are the only types of tiles that only feature one of each kind. Both the Flower set and the Seasons set consist of four unique tiles, which can be matched together in sets of two to form a pair.
Is Mahjong Real the original Chinese Mah Jongg?
No, it isn’t. Mahjong Real is loosely based on the traditional mahjong game that originated two centuries ago in China, but the rules are very different. Traditional mahjong, which is sometimes also called mahjong rummy, is played with three or four players. Mahjong Real, however, is a form of computerized mahjong for one player, and is a game variation often referred to as mahjong solitaire.
Mahjong solitaire games like this one often do use the traditional Chinese set of 144 tiles with their iconic symbols and characters. These tiles can be divided into three main types, each containing two or more themed sets:
Suited Tiles
- The Bamboos
- The Dots
- The Characters
Bonus Tiles
- The Four Seasons
- The Flowers
Honor Tiles
- The Four Winds
- The Three Dragons
In mahjong solitaire, each set is sometimes worth a different amount of points, with pairs made using the bonus and honor tiles usually yielding more points than the suited ones.
Other variations may use other tile sets and pictograms, however. If you want an example, have a look at games such as Mahjong Dimensions and Mahhjong Alchemy, which each feature their own unique tile designs.
